General Ophthalmologist

About Dr. Bill Shaw, M.D.
  • Graduated: University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago
  • Residency: Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary
  • Specializes in: General ophthalmology, cataract surgery, glaucoma, LASIK, retinal disease, strabismus surgery

Dr. Shaw started wearing corrective eyewear in grade school, which necessitated yearly eye examinations. He looked forward to them because he liked the challenging ocular testing and was intrigued by his eye doctor's exam lane equipment. Dr. Shaw especially liked going because, unlike at the pediatrician's office, he was never administered vaccinations.

Partly as a result of his exposure to the field of optometry, Dr. Shaw entered college with plans of applying to medical school. The rigors of academic learning wore him out however, and after graduating with a degree in chemistry, he instead started working. Dr. Shaw worked as an analytical chemist for two years, during which time, and with his family's encouragement, the desire to apply to medical school returned.

Because he had been out of school for a while, Dr. Shaw decided to enroll in a graduate chemistry degree program in order to bolster his medical school application. After a year of study, he applied and was successfully admitted to the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. While there, it became apparent that admission into an ophthalmology residency program was very competitive. As a result, Dr. Shaw decided to work for a year as a researcher in a retinal metabolism laboratory, primarily to increase his odds. There he learned wet lab management, tissue preparation and handling, experimental ocular surgery, and assisted in experimental design, preparation, setup and execution.

This added year of eye research training was instrumental in his gaining acceptance into the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary residency program. There he worked under some of the most recognized subspecialists in the field of academic ophthalmology. The Infirmary was also the region's level one eye trauma center. Dr. Shaw liked general ophthalmology, but also considered doing a vitreoretinal fellowship. As it turned out, family responsibilities and geographic limitations necessitated his starting practice as a general ophthalmologist at the conclusion of his residency.

Dr. Shaw has over twenty years of experience as a general ophthalmologist, and has co-authored several publications on ocular disorders. He has performed thousands of intra and extra-ocular procedures, including strabismus surgery, cataract extraction, glaucoma filtering surgery, LASIK, and eyelid procedures. He is adept at corneal crosslinking and laser treatment for glaucoma, cataract, and retinal disease. Dr. Shaw eagerly works side-by-side with his optometric colleagues in order to promote optimal patient outcomes.
